In late 1984, visionary Donald Stewart, then president and chief operating officer of Wesley Medical Center, began thinking about what could be done to address what he saw as significant deficiencies in the traditional health-care system. He was especially concerned about the lack of attention given health promotion and disease prevention.

At the time, there was an emerging national trend of for-profit corporations buying not-for-profit hospitals. Stewart explored whether that trend could be leveraged to increase the emphasis on, and provide the resources for, health promotion and disease prevention. His creative thinking crystallized into a wonderful vision – a healthier Kansas through the sale of Wesley Medical Center. Sale proceeds would go into perpetual endowments to create two foundations. One foundation, the United Methodist Health Ministry Fund, would continue the hospital’s connection with the church. The other, which became the Kansas Health Foundation, would work to improve health through a focus on wellness.

Today, the Kansas Health Foundation is deeply committed to improving the health of all Kansans, especially that of young children, by focusing on the people, policies and systems that prevent disease and promote health.
