For some Kansas children, when school is out for the summer, they no longer have access to the healthy lunches they enjoy for most of the year. But, through the USDA summer meals program, sites across the country, and across Kansas, are ensuring these children don’t go hungry during the summer months.
Unfortunately, Kansas ranks 48th nationally for participation in the program among eligible children. The Kansas Health Foundation, in partnership with Kansas Appleseed, is looking to improve these numbers. For the summer of 2016, KHF provided funding for approximately 80 sites in the state to serve these healthy meals for children.
Even with this support, 35 Kansas counties were still without a site serving meals this summer.
