Everyone counts. That’s a basic message that must be heard by all Kansans this year in advance of the 2020 Census. Not only is this survey, conducted once every 10 years, important for data and research purposes, but it also has a direct impact on our lives and communities.

“The census gets me excited because it’s an opportunity to really make a difference in Kansas,” said Janet Johnson, co-chair of the Wichita-Sedgwick County Complete Count Committee. “Everything from health to education, for kindergartners, to college students, roads, transportation, economic development…it all comes back to us being counted.”

Population numbers derived from the Census are used to determine federal allocations for numerous programs and organizations. These essential programs rely on a complete and accurate count of all Kansans. This includes hard-to-count populations like non-English speakers, renters, college students and communities of color.

The Kansas Health Foundation recognizes the importance of an accurate census count to help Kansas have access to federal funding for critical community and health programs. An accurate census count is a large part of building strong, healthy Kansas communities. For these reasons, KHF has provided more than $500,000 to the League of Kansas Municipalities and state government to support programs aimed at creating awareness and reaching all communities.
