The Hub Argentine’s vision is for “the Argentine neighborhood to be a diverse and welcoming community, celebrating the God-given gifts of every person where health, wholeness, and joy thrive.” We believe this will happen if every person views themselves as having gifts, value, and dignity. Therefore, our mission is to “help our community members see the potential in themselves and others through connection and relationships.” Our programs focusing on helping our neighbors connect to their individual gifts, their neighbors, faith, vital resources for health and wholeness, and to joy.
At our core, we are focused on developing deep relationships with our neighbors in the Argentine community and we are also working with churches across the Kansas City District of the United Methodist Church to connect them to the Argentine and Wyandotte County communities. Our ministry is modeled on Asset Based Community Development which celebrates God’s abundant gifts and creation in every individual.
The Hub’s programs embody our values and mission. Our “Neighbors of Argentine” series tells the stories of individuals who live in the Argentine neighborhood and shares their gifts and talents. This program is a way for neighbors to connect to neighbors and for individuals to recognize the gifts they may not have seen in each other or themselves. The Community Market is a free grocery store where our neighbors can shop for their own food and the Clothing Closet is a free store where people can shop for clothing. Both of these programs are designed to provide vital resources for health and wholeness while also affirming the dignity within every individual. Our After School Program partners with 18 students and families at New Stanley Elementary School to provide academic support, after school care, leadership skills, and enrichment activities. And, our Community Garden is a meeting place for neighbors to connect with each other, grow health and free produce, and build community.
BRIEF HISTORY: The Hub is located at the Metropolitan Ave UMC building in the Argentine community and is a new ministry of the Kansas City District of the United Methodist Church. In July 2020, Metropolitan Avenue United Methodist Church closed after 132 years of vital ministry in the Argentine neighborhood. This closing gave birth to two new United Methodist ministries in its place: Ushindi UMC and The Hub. Ushindi United Methodist Fellowship is a vibrant United Methodist Congregation with worship services in Swahili and Kinyarwanda on Sunday mornings.
